Work & Edition Details
Equilateral for Four Clarinets, commissioned by Kevin Strang for the Sunshine Clarinet Quartet, is my first attempt to create music that flows on a seamless compression and relaxation of time that I call "Flowing Meter." With this approach to time, tempos can match the time-flow perceived in listening to natural cycles like that of breathing, or of ocean waves meeting the shore. The quartet premiered this work at ClarinetFest 2012 in Asissi, Italy.
Though the rhythms of "Equilateral" looks simple on the page, this is a very difficult piece as an ensemble because each member of the quartet has to 'lock in' to the same accelerando and ritard throughout the piece. This is the first piece in Flowing Meter, with the tempo rising to twice the speed, and then, falling back in equal lengths: hence the name.
