Work & Edition Details
Pigalle was written in 2009 for cellists Tamsy Kaner and Ann Lines. It is a divertimento, a set of fve movements without a common narrative. The frst movement aspires to echo the can-can of the fn-de-siècle Moulin Rouge, hence its title. Rosetta window celebrates that of Canterbury Cathedral, while the 3rd movement describes something quite the opposite; an urban scene. The fourth movement is a memento of the village church of Montozzi, near Pergine Valdarno in Tuscany, Italy. Eglantine et Bérengère are the names of a brave mother and daughter during the persecution of the Cathars (Albigensians) in the 13th-14th century Languedoc, France.
