Work & Edition Details
The Sinfonieorchester der Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg first performed this Orchestral Overture on 30 February 2017 under Guido Johannes Rumstadt. The name Via Carolina refers to the medieval trade route via Carolina. It connected not only the two beautiful cities of Prague and Nuremberg, but also both countries. At that time, they were part of one political entity. The composition is a celebration of this belonging of two beautiful European cities, the history of which was closely intertwined especially during the time of Charles IV, and at the same time a celebration of today's European belonging. It is not program music, yet we can hear in the opening theme, which returns twice during the composition, something like a narrative from the "old days", in quick parts the active business activity that Via Carolina has allowed, or the royal Majesty in the slow part that hovers over it, the theme of which ends the Composition, since the monarch has the last word. And that word speaks to our present.
