Trombone Studies, Vol. 2

This two-volume anthology of studies has been made at the request of the publishers in order to make material available that conforms to the methods and practical requerenents of the present day. Many earlier books of studies have been scrutinized and extracts taken from them; at the same time a number of interested composers who understand the instrument have been commissioned to write etudes. Accordingly this collection comprises material that is both old and new, ranged in order of difficulty. Special value has been laid on achieving a continuous development of technique. Thus the range in gradually extended, key signatures and time signatures constantly vary, and the tenor and alto clefs are introduced, together with double and triple tonging. Some of the studies call for especial patience and care, since they make special demands as regards accuracy, the pitching of intervals and slide technique. The same may be said of those etudes that acquaint the student with the stylistic features of jazz and dance music. Speeds should be chosen that relate the written tempo indications to the standard of the student's technique and embouchure. In some of the studies the dynamics are carefully marked throughout, while others contain no markings at all, in order to increase the interpretative demands on the student.
