Work & Edition Details
Originally composed for chamber orchestra in 2015. Premiered by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Lars Vogt, at the Sage Gateshead on the 22nd January 2016.
This version arranged for and premiered by RNCM Wind Ensemble to accompany Mozart's Gran Partita, conducted by Mark Heron, on the 4th March 2017.
Federalizing Zoo is intended as a postlude to Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, perhaps as the aftermath of the opera, or even the disastrous honeymoon of Figaro and Susanna. The 'Zoo' of the title alludes to the raucous opening and the, at times, unusual orchestration, but the title as a whole was created as an anagram of Le Nozze di Figaro.
Snatches of Figaro can be heard, including the semiquaver idea which opens the overture of the opera, and the main theme of the aria 'Voi che sapete'. The rhythmic structure of Federalizing Zoo's opening bars is inspired by Figaro's aria 'Cinque, Dieci, Venti, Trenta': the rests are thirty, twenty, ten, and five semiquavers long.
The work can be heard as a process which gradually reveals ideas from Figaro, as though half-remembered or dreamt. This process ultimately fails as the opera cannot be fully revisited or recaptured, meaning that the end of this short piece reverts to the inconclusivity of its opening gesture.
