Work & Edition Details
After Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, the Viennese prepared for the imminent return of the Austrian Emperor, Franz I. Nearly all the city’s theatres had ceremonia works written or composed for this occasion. Louis Spohr, who had accepted the post of Kapellmeister at the Theater an der Wien in 1813, received one such commission to compose a cantata on the liberation of Germany. Initially, Spohr had reservations due to the difficult subject matter. However, once the Viennese writer and critic Caroline Pichler – who was well-known for her historic novels and literary salons – had agreed to write the libretto, Spohr set about the task in January 1814. The result of this collaboration with Pichler was a text in which the tension between domestic and martial scenes offered considerable stimulus for a colourful and varied composition.
