aura

I composed "aura" for Hanna Kinnunen as a part of Composition comments project arranged by the Time of Music Festival in Viitasaari, Finland in 2009. The composers taking part in the project were asked to compose a new work which should, in a way or another, comment on certain contemporary music works that were featured on the festival program that year. My work comments on two other works for flute or bass flute and electronics: "Poison Mushroom" by Dai Fujikura and "Atem-Lied" by Toshio Hosokawa.

aura was my first work for acoustic instruments enhanced further by the use of live electronics. Around the time I composed aura, I had for years concentrated on composing for acoustic instruments and human voice. Still, the world of electronic music was not completely strange to me, as I had spent years doing electronic music in the late 1990's during my teenage years.

Shortly after completing aura in June 2009, I composed another electro-acoustic work, "Göreme", for guitar and electronics in the early autumn of 2009. The time had arrived to bring together the intuitive approach to composing music from my formative years with the craft I had been polishing for years during my composition studies. The work is dedicated to Hanna Kinnunen, who premiered the work at Time of Music Festival in 2009.
