Work & Edition Details
Edvard Grieg composed this funeral march in memory of his fellow composer Richard Nordraak, who had a decisive influence on Grieg's attitude as a composer: Nordraak opened Grieg's eyes and ears to a specifically Norwegian way of composing, with the result that Grieg turned away from the specifically Central European way represented by Mendelssohn, for example, and henceforth strove to emphasise the Norwegian more strongly in his music. This is evident not only in the use of Norwegian folk songs, but also in the style of the movement and the harmony. Grieg originally composed the Funeral March for piano. However, he himself made various versions for winds and percussion, from which one can see that he himself had a high opinion of this piece. At his own request, the march was played at Grieg's funeral in 1907.
