Work & Edition Details
This piece for solo flute was composed in 1913 and published by Jobert editions in 1927, almost ten years after the death of Claude Debussy. Originally it was called Pan Flute and was used as stage music for a theatrical performance 'Psyche' by Gabriel Mourey. The title 'Syrinx' comes from the name of a nymph loved by the god Pan who transformed her into a reed and made into panpipes. This funeral lament is compared to Debussy's many other works including 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune', 'Fêtes galantes', 'thème du pâtre de La Boîte à joujoux' and 'Pour invoquer Pan des Epigraphes antiques'.
