Work & Edition Details
This is a reconstruction of Mozart's last unfinished work for horn. It is the second movement of his so-called Concerto No. 1 written for Leutgeb in 1791 and reworked by Süssmayr in 1792. Süssmayr never saw Mozart's draft and completed the movement under direction from Leutgeb. However using the original draft it is possible to see Mozart's intentions much more clearly and restore the bars which were cut by Leutgeb because of his declining embouchure. Süssmayr signed Mozart's name and added the date 1792. During the cataloguing of Mozart's works it was assumed this should have read 1782 and thus the concerto was labelled as number one.This reconstruction has been recorded by Pip Eastop and the Hanover Band, conducted by Anthony Halstead. Richard Morrison, writing in The Times, stated that it was, 'rather better than that of Mozart's pupil, Süssmayr '. However I defer to Mozart's description of Süssmayr as a, 'complete ass and fool'!Also included in this score is Mozart's famous running commentary to Leutgeb with English translation.
