Work & Edition Details
Handel's Passion oratorio based on St. John the Evangelist was probably written for a Good Friday service in Hamburg in 1704 and first performed there. Along with Reinhard Keiser's 'Der blutige und sterbende Jesus' (text by Chr. Fr. Hunold, gen. Menantes) from the same year, it is the first Passion written in the dramatic style influenced by opera, which was new at the time. At the same time, it is Handel's first oratorio.
