Work & Edition Details
Is it not what we are all searching and longing for – that one great, true love? When do we know? What makes two people sure of it? For woman composer Caroline Thon, an “unanswered question”. Even though the composition of the same name by Charles Ives addresses wider questions, it is still the source of inspiration for this composition. What is particularly challenging about it is that Charles Ives’ musical ideas and means cannot actually be fully realised using a big band ensemble. Delicately bowed string passages from Ives’ piece, for example, inspired Thon to use paper as a sound source – representing at the same time a metaphor for love letters written in vain.
