Work & Edition Details
Marin Marais (1656-1728), a prestigious French composer of the Baroque period, also played the viola and viola da gamba for Louis XIV. He wrote nearly 600 pieces for his instrument, divided into 5 books, each of which included, among other things, some forty suites. Nicolas Prost offers a selection of 24 pieces adapted for saxophone, which can easily be programmed for concert or in the context of teaching, as melodic and virtuoso studies, from the 2nd cycle onwards. The pressThis may surprise you, but you will be surprised to see that they are sufficient. The different pieces are presented succinctly. It will be expedient to introduce the author to saxophonists, perhaps even to show them the film Tous les matins du monde... and above all to have them listen to the music of Marin Marais. It would be nonsense to play these pieces without first listening to them and getting them into condition. On the other hand, they can help to open up students to other music, and these very respectful adaptations of the text can contribute greatly to this.
