Work & Edition Details
The 8th Symphony is Bruckner's last completely surviving and most extensive symphonic work. Bruckner completed the first version in September 1887, and the second version, on which this transcription is based, on March 10, 1890. To this day, the work is considered one of the most complex, rich and multi-layered in all of symphonic literature. In his expansive organ improvisations, Bruckner repeatedly drew on themes from his symphonies and created organ symphonies from them. For this reason, the present transcription should be understood as an artistic discipline in its own right and not as a substitute for the orchestral version. For especially in the 19th century, organ arrangements of orchestral works enjoyed great popularity.
