Work & Edition Details
The cantata is intended for Christmas Day. It was included in the Hamburg cantata year 1721, which Telemann sent to the city of Frankfurt in gratitude for the citizenship he had been granted. The composition deals with the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ. The radiantly bright opening chorale "In dulci jubilo" is followed by the setting of Luther's poem "Das ew'ge Licht geht da herein" (bass aria). It is the fourth verse of the hymn "Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ". The tenor's praise and thanksgiving aria, with delightful double echo effects, leads on to the angels' song of praise. The cantata ends with an ecstatic Alleluia jubilation.
