Work & Edition Details
In his quintet, Mozart placed a violin as an important second part alongside the concertante horn and assigned the two violas as well as the bass (often played by a cello) almost exclusively accompanying tasks. The violin part has the same important task in the present trio, but it is equally supported by the piano. The arrangement in the instrumentation Brahms chose for his famous Horn Trio op. 40 offers a very appealing extension of the narrow range of literature for this fascinating combination of instruments.
