Historical background
It was in Vienna in 1801 at the age of 31 and threatenned by the onset of deafness, that Ludwig van Beethoven composed the two sonatas of opus 27. He described the work as a "Sonata quasi una fantasia" and so freed himself from the fetters of form - lively, slow, lively - by starting with a slow movement... This piece, dedicated to the young countess Juliette Guiccardi and christened Moonlight Sonata by the poet Rellstab (because in his imagination it summoned up a night-time stroll), brings usto the threshold of the Romantic Movement.
