Work & Edition Details
Black Venus is a set of four short dances (i. passionate, ii. fast and energetic, iii. in slow motion, iv. agile) for solo guitar and takes it's title from a short story by Angela Carter. Baudelaire sits in his darkened Parisien apartment in front of a raging fire whilst his Creole mistress dances for him, striking a series of exotic poses. She is naked except for her jewellery which sparks and glistens on the ceiling as it catches the light of the fire. Black Venus was commissioned by Tom Kerstens, who gave the first performance at the 1999 International Guitar Festival in Bath.
