Work & Edition Details
Like John Ireland, Bridge studied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, later teaching Britten. His music is, however, championed more consistently compared to John Ireland. Earlier works are distinctively romantic while later in life, his music showed influences, not so much of Schönberg and Berg as previously thought, but of Skryabin and Stravinsky. His most known chamber music piece is the cello sonata from 1913-1917. Less known to cellists is Oration (Concerto Elegiaco) from 1930, a work of great beauty which includes a fast, sensual section, one of those dream passages one wishes would appear in every cello concerto. The exquisite Valse Russe, yet another example on Bridge’s gift for writing a beautiful melody, is taken from the third set of Miniatures for piano trio, composed in 1908.
