Work & Edition Details
I hold a special affection for John Ireland (1879-1962). As is the case with many of the great, neglected composers, he was brought to my attention by pianist Bengt Forsberg. The magnificent Clarinet sonata was the first piece I encountered, followed by the works for piano trio. The cello sonata from 1922, I personally find the greatest English cello sonata — next to that of his student Benjamin Britten. Ireland, who lived the last decade of his life in a converted windmill in Sussex, was influenced by Stravinsky, Debussy and Ravel. This led away from the typical folkloristic tone language of Holst and Vaughan-Williams and closer to one of impressionism and uninhibited romanticism. Threnody is the 2nd movement from the 1939 suite Concertino Pastorale for string orchestra.
