Work & Edition Details
The Misa Breve Afrocubana was written by Odaline de la Martinez in her late teens for a composition competition which she won and revised in 1975, replacing the original Kyrie for the one here. It is a setting of the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Osanna and Agnus Dei of the Latin Mass, and features ostinati and simultaneous tempi to great effect.
The work received its first performance in Arizona in 1966, where it was awarded a prize. The first European performance of the revised version was given by the Choir of the Royal Academy of Music, London conducted by Michael Procter in 1975. The Kyrie of this revised version is based on the composer’s own setting of Hodie Christus natus est.
