first performance: Unna/Germany, Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst, October 6th 2012, by Berthold Frieder, Katharina Gross & Felicitas Stephan (celli), for Cello Festival am Hellweg Arnold Marinissen wrote Three Passacaglias for the festival Celloherbst am Hellweg in Unna, Germany. The piece was first performed in this festival on October 6th 2012, by the cellists Frieder Berthold, Katharina Gross and Felicitas Stephan. In each of the three Passacaglias, one of the cellists repeats a short phrase over and over again – not always in the bass register, as it used to be in the old days. The other two players weave their parts around it, supporting, harmonizing and embellishing it.
