Work & Edition Details
Most pieces in this collection are transcribed with cellist Claes Gunnarsson in mind. Currently the principal cellist of the Gothenburg S.O., he came to the conclusion that besides performing works for two cellos and piano, we should also experience sharing a desk in an orchestra. Hence, he invited me to join his orchestra for their European tour in 2008. The conductor Gustavo Dudamel chose the Stenhammar Interlude, Mellanspel, from the ‘Cantata’ (Sången) op.44 for his favoured encore, but it is Claes’ love for the piece which made a transcription a must. Stenhammar is, together with Roman and Berwald, considered the most important Swedish composer before the contemporary scene. The leading Swedish pianist of his time, he was also chief conductor of the Gothenburg orchestra with which he premiered several works by collegues Sibelius and Nielsen. Besides operas, piano sonatas and numerous songs, he wrote two piano concertos, two symphonies and a Serenade for orchestra. The six wonderful string quartets form a cornerstone of the Swedish literature for string quartet — and could easily play that role in other countries, as well.
