Work & Edition Details
Impacts and Fractures originated in sketches that I made for the Kreutzer string quartet to play for a collaborative project with the choreographer Catherine Seymour. Shortly before the rehearsal period, I was knocked down by a car and was unable to complete music for the project. The project continued with the quartet improvising musical material. One of the improvisations, by my wife the violist Bridget Carey, was particularly special to me. This work is partially my reaction to the accident, encompassing fragments of Bridget’s improvisation which impact on my harmonic material.
The quartet is treated as a homogenous ensemble from which the individual instruments attempt to escape. Like a cartoon in which scenes are presented out of chronology, the musical ideas are presented as fragments of a whole that can only be reconstructed in the listener’s imagination.
The work was written for the Kreutzer string quartet in admiration and is dedicated to John Casken on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday.
