Work & Edition Details
'Fanfare for Gosport' was commissioned by New Dimensions - a Hampshire-wide music initiative lead by Anvil Arts and Turner Sims. The work was written for Gosport Solent Brass Band and premiered on the 11th September 2016, at the Royal Clarence Marina during the Gosport Heritage Open Day. 'Fanfare for Gosport' acknowledges and celebrates the heritage and people of Gosport. Each movement of the piece reflects an aspect of the area: the first, 'Metal & Salt', takes inspiration from the rich history of Gosport as a naval town. The movement evokes the claustrophobic atmosphere and sounds of a submarine as it is slowly dives deeper and deeper. The second movement, 'Looking Out | Looking Back', is reflective and uses prerecorded stories of those that worked on the submarines in Gosport. The final movement takes fragments of ideas from traditional fanfare music but gives it a more contemporary feel that is celebratory and full of life.
