Work & Edition Details
The second Canon from the ‘Sechs Studien in kanonischer Form für den Pedalflügel’, op.56. A Pedal piano, a pianoforte with pedals like an organ, was built for Schumann in 1843 while residing in Dresden. He was so enthusiastic about it that he convinced Mendelsohn to create a special course for it at the Leipzig Conservatory. The second of the six canons became a popular piece, with versions for piano 4 hands by Bizet, 2 pianos by Debussy, and piano trio arrangements by prominent names such as T Kirchner and A Hollaender. I play the Debussy version with my son Leif. It is thanks to him I now know this piece.
