Work & Edition Details
Ad Infinitum is an outcome of discussions about the nature of memory and how music is experienced during a masterclass with Jo Kondo at Dartington International Sumer School during the summer of 2000. It is built entirely out of rather simple blocks of material, and creates patterns through the juxtaposition of these blocks, one after another. An analogy can be drawn with the experience of looking at sculpture: it is fascinating how the same object can reveal different aspects of itself when viewed from different angles. The intention is that every silence is coloured by the relationships between the blocks of material, yet these relationships can never be heard explicitly, being totally dependent on the listener’s memory for their existence. And every sound invites meditation on the richness and variety of the sound of the violin.
