Work & Edition Details
There can be no doubt, that the singing of the Kol nidre is the most solemn moment in the Jewish religious year. It marks the beginning of the liturgy for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The tune is at least as old as the XVIth century. Joseph Bloch is way outside the liturgical world, even though the typical melodic quality is present. The solo instrument has a virtuoso part. The situation is totally different in the case of Moritz Deutsch. He was a singer and a typical representative of the emancipated Jew with a strong interest in German culture. Lewandowski gently transposes the vocal line into the violin.
