PERCUSSION: 3 +TIMP
Percussion, player 1: apart from in movement 2 ('Fanfara'), this part involves specialist 'hand' and 'ethnic' drumming improvisatory parts. Even so, there remain two highly specialised instruments in the score (Irish bodhrán and Indian tablas) that may be simulated by using a goblet drum (eg darbuca). Percussion, players 2 and 3 play standard orchestral percussion and can interchange parts. The tuned bells represent Buddhist temple bells; hand-bells may be used but since the dynamic is piano the bells should be mounted and struck, not played with the clapper.
