Work & Edition Details
During my first year as Kettle's Yard New Music Fellow, Michael Harrison curated the exhibition 'A Measure of Reality'. It was a beautifully curated show and contained work that Michael was really passionate about. Richard Long - one of the artists featured - made the piece Crossing Stones in 1987. A documentation of a walk, its text reads: 'a stone from Aldeburgh beach on the East coast carried to Aberystwyth beach on the West coast / a stone from Aberystwyth beach on the West coast carried to Aldeburgh beach on the East coast / a 626 mile walk in 20 days / England Wales England / 1987'. In homage to the English experimental composers that Michael loved, I have translated the contours of this journey into a line for 'cello, accompanied by its open strings.
