Work & Edition Details
‘Now it goes at full speed’, he wrote to his publisher Simrock in the beginning of June 1886. He was referring to composing his 2nd set of Slavonic Dances, op.72, which according to a letter of July 9, must have taken six or seven weeks to complete! ‘I enjoy writing the Slavonic Dances immensely and I think they will be completely different [from the first set,op.46], no joking and no irony.’ They were originally written for piano 4 hands, only later to appear in the colourful orchestration for which they are famous. The second dance from the series, the E minor, is immediately captivating and sings of undefined desire.
