Work & Edition Details
2 Trumpets, 2 Horns, 2 Trombones, and Tuba; This work, in its four contrasting movements, is composed using modified traditional musical forms. While the first, third, and fourth movements are basically tonal, elements of “contemporary music” are evident through the use of quartal harmonies, odd meters, and incisive rhythms. The slow second movement is far less “tonal” and makes use, in several sections, elements of serial composition, while the third movement is set in a 6/8 and 5/8 blues format, using both Bb major and Bb minor tonalities. In one section of Almost the Blues, the players are given the option of playing the music as written or improvising sets of "fours." (2007)
