Work & Edition Details
Written for the Doelenkwartet with financial support from Fonds Podiumkunsten, first performance on April 24 2013, Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw aan het IJ Like many composers of his generation, Rob Zuidam has a background in pop music. This can be heard in his preference for clear rhythms, phrasing and a harmony which one experiences tonally in the sense of points of gravity. His fascination for sound is big, but usually subordinate to energy and the long line. This is clearest in the first and third movement. The second movement is more lyrical, giving space to the individual instruments and resonates more with Zuidam's vocal dramatic works. Like in Ligeti's two string quartets Zuidam likes complex, almost pointillistic textures, which like pointillist paintings give a clear picture from a distance.
