Work & Edition Details
Zuidam's music appears to be in constant development. What has remained from the beginning is the clear form carried by a stream of emotional energy. This combination could already be found in Ground for piano, performed in 1986 in the Utrecht music centre Vredenburg. It was the first time that Zuidam was represented at an official concert. Zuidam: 'The writer Céline said he was striving to bring back emotion in the written language. If you look at his notebooks, it appears that he often tinkered endlessly with a sentence in order to find the most spontaneous form. The final result has the directness of a kind of delirious fever patient. That way of working appeals to me. A contemporary composer cannot fall back on a system, but has to reinvent the wheel for each piece. As soon as I feel that familiar mechanisms are starting to work, I try to choose a different path.'
