Work & Edition Details
Noche Oscura was composed for the International Vocal Competition 's Hertogenbosch and is part of Canciones del Alma (Songs of the Soul), a cycle of several songs and instrumental interludes for soprano and large ensemble. The complete cycle premiered in 2012 during the "Zaterdag Matinee". Noche Oscura was composed on a poem by the Spanish mystic San Juan de la Cruz (1542-1591). This reform-minded prior of the Carmelite monastery in Granada personally experienced the horrors of the Inquisition during a stay in prison in Toledo. In hymn-like verses and darkly erotic metaphors, his ecstatic poems describe the path of the human soul towards spiritual union with God. RZ]
