Work & Edition Details
The technical demands placed on the individual brass players (height, virtuosity) clearly take a back seat to the musical demands placed on the entire group of musicians (certainty in intonation and rhythm, dynamic balance). (For example, short chorale excerpts are used again and again to illustrate a development over a long period of time in complex motivic interweavings, some of which can be understood programmatically. These long-lasting developments are supported in all compositions by various bell imitations. At such points, each player has to integrate himself into the overall sequence. It is seldom the case that a melody and thus an individual brass player is clearly in the foreground. The splendour of the sound and the brilliance of the brass, both of which are often associated with "the festive", are often dispensed with in favour of a more quietly internalised, personally coloured expression. The most intense passages are often the quiet ones, not the loud ones, for example in "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen": conclusion of No.4.
