Work & Edition Details
Pastorale was commissioned by Assi Karttunen and first performed by her in Helsinki in 2016, and she also played it soon afterwards at the Venice Biennale as part of the multi-media event 'Et in Arcadia Ego'. Although the title is suggestive of simplicity and rural tranquillity – and this is partly captured in the music – the piece makes considerable demands upon the performer and includes passages influenced by the idea of the unmeasured prelude. The form of the music unfolds in a very free manner as small ideas come and go, and then an expansive melody opens the music out in a more directional way.
