Work & Edition Details
“Poisoned today!” is the second song from my setting of Lasseter’s Diary. At this point in the story, Harold Lasseter has been abandoned by his fellow gold prospectors and is alone in the Central Australian desert. When even the camels run off he is left with little food or water.
Believing he had once seen gold deposits “as thick as plums in a pudding” in the central Australian desert, Harold Lasseter convinced many people – made desperate by Depression Era privation – including the Australian Workers' Union, to fund a well-equipped expedition that even included small aeroplanes, to relocate the gold reef.
It is now impossible to separate myth from reality concerning Lasseter. The expedition met with calamities from the vehicles being unable to cope with the terrain (having to be replaced by camels) to aeroplanes that crashed or were forced to landi. But the most crucially his fellow prospectors lost their faith in him and Lasseter was eventually abandoned completely. After his death, his diary was found, which is not only the sole source of information regarding his final days but also states that he re-located the reef.
