Work & Edition Details
When Claude Debussy died, his final project 'Six Sonatas for Diverse Instruments' was incomplete. He had only written 3 sonatas. There are no sketches whatsoever of the remaining three. Nevertheless, he had set out a complete instrumentation list for each sonata. For the Debussy Centenary in 2018, the Australian National Academy of Music commissioned Lyle Chan to compose the unwritten 3 sonatas according to Debussy's stated instrumentation, but in his own style while complementing Debussy's. The Sonata No. 6 is for 13 instruments – being, as Debussy expressly intended, the sum total of all the instruments from Sonatas Nos 1-5, with the addition of a double bass.
