Work & Edition Details
“For the violoncello quartet, I departed from Liszt’s version of Via Crucis. The piece fascinates me in all it austere sobriety. The monodic chant alternating with phrases in harmonic setting. This alternation became the basic structure of my piece. I also used some bribes of the chant that provided the underlying (modal) material. Above this architecture, I constructed my spectral story. In contrast to the serene piece of Liszt, this story is most of the time very vivid, restless and sometimes even harsh. Starting with very low and dark notes, climbing up to ethereal nights and unfolding in full range at the very end. As if connecting heaven and earth.”
