Work & Edition Details
Modem was commissioned by the Composers’ Union of Kiev in 2001. After a few years of being out of touch with friends in Ukraine, my computer modem chirped a communication asking for a new piece which would reunite us. The data-jitter sound of the modem connecting to cyberspace opens the work, after which the two violins engage in canonic dialogues. The initial separation of the violins on stage is both a representation of long-distance communication as well as being of necessity: the music is continuous for both players, so neither has time to turn pages. Eventually, the data-jitter pulsations start to resemble continuous note-streams frequently found in music by J.S. Bach.Modem has been performed in Kiev, Rotterdam, Manchester and San Diego.
