Work & Edition Details
The undated String Quintet No. 2 in D major was performed - according to tradition - in 1854 at the composer's home. Since the composer was always interested in presenting her new works, this date also gives an indication of the approximate time of composition. It was preceded by a fragmentary quintet (C major), which is how the numbering (no. 2) should be understood. Mayer's treatment of the middle movements is interesting. She proceeds here as can be observed in other multi-movement works: If the slow movement is of particular weight, she prefaces it with the scherzo, as in this case. This is followed by an extended variation movement, Andante cantabile. The work is characterized by joy of playing, the individual voices interwoven in the same mode, very suitable for practiced players, also amateurs, medium difficulty.
