Work & Edition Details
Cantata in 7 parts. The impetus to write a piece in which "the spirit" as a creative principle was to be the theme and subject came to me in conversation with a group of theologians in Hamburg. But I had already been preoccupied for some time with ideas in which mental and musical conceptions of the feast of Pentecost merged. Pentecost is the festival that most strongly resists a secularising reinterpretation. Its roots reach down to the Genesis account of creation: "And the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters." It was with this that the work was to begin - and I was aware that this ancient, powerful, visionary text had hardly ever been set to music and that it bordered on presumption to compose it. (In Haydn's "Creation", Genesis I is mostly used only in the recitatives. The music is not yet actually called for; arias, ensembles and choruses are based on new settings).
