Work & Edition Details
The texts of nos. 1 and 2 are taken from sacred Russian-German folk songs (18th century), no. 3 is a hymn of the 14th century. In it, an expressive-dramatic, "Gothic" tone prevails, while "The Rose of Paradise" and "The Tree of Life" have a meditative, introverted expression. The "mysterious rose" is an ancient symbol of Marian devotion - an invocation also found in the Lauretan Litany.
