Work & Edition Details
The Sonatina for violin and piano was awarded Second Prize in 1933 at the “George Enescu” composition competition; although ranked first, the work did not receive First Prize because the regulations required the laureate to serve as a member of future juries, which was incompatible with the composer’s age of only 16. The Sonatina for violin and piano is notable for its supple writing, of a sober elegance, in which the instrumental dialogue is conceived with remarkable refinement. The piano, far from having a purely accompanying role, participates actively in the musical discourse, articulating the formal structure and supporting the thematic evolution, while the violin unfolds its melodic line in a constant relationship of balance and tension with its partner. The harmonic language avoids the conventional, proposing subtle solutions, often imbued with a restrained lyricism and a discreet melancholy characteristic of Lipatti’s expressive world.
