Work & Edition Details
The figure of Dinu Lipatti stands, in Romanian culture and beyond the country’s borders, in the same orbit as Enescu, Brâncuşi, Eliade… being considered one of the greatest performers of the first half of the twentieth century. Dinu Lipatti’s renown is owed to his wholly exceptional artistic and human qualities, brought to fruition, however, by assiduous, methodical and profound work. The pianist had a brilliant, prophetic vision of the evolution of piano technique and of the art of interpretation. “The composer” appears, evidently, as a continuator of the Enescian style, ingeniously drawing on Romanian folklore, with powerful and innovative aspects of modernity. Through its proportions, the complexity of its writing, the contemporaneity of its musical language in its time, the value and elevation of its human message and, not least, the originality of its structure, the Fantasy Op. 8 represents a peak of Dinu Lipatti’s compositional creation and changes posterity’s perspective on and appreciation of the creative side of his personality.
