Work & Edition Details
(Am Hofe der jungen Prinzen). The poetic charge of the work, implied in the title AM HOFE DER JUNGEN PRINZEN (In the Court of the Young Princes), was inspired "by an exchange of letter cards between the painter Franz Marc and the poet Else Lasker-Schüler, who had created a private myth for herself as 'Prince Jussuf', which Marc illustrated in postcard watercolours" (Koerppen). The work consists of three "scenes", a colourfully brilliant CAPRICCIO (THE MASK FESTIVAL), which touches on the realm of the programmatic, a genre-like second movement of quiet cantabile, BARCAROLE (CHICKEN RIDE IN THE EVENING), and a final movement, ALLEGRO DA CACCIA (THE HUNT), in which the light-hearted, temperamental beginning is transformed into a darker mood and the imagined sound of the hunting horn is lost in the strange, uncanny atmosphere expressed in a suggestive stanza by Eichendorff:
