Work & Edition Details
Fortunato is a picaresque drama-cum-comedy. Librettist Vanda Monaco Westerståhl based her story on medieval plays and romances about a rogue protagonist who survives in a hostile world. The first act sees Fortunato leaving home and finding success as he rises to fame by killing men at d-Duke Gustav's behest. His modesty and good looks bring him at last to the attention of Gustav's bride, Birgitta. Two striking figures attempt to nudge our hero to maturity. The first is Mariella, a maidservant who implies she's a spirit of the earth. The other, Voland, is apparently Duke Gustav's court fool, but isn't he really the Devil? (a very genial devil). Scenes include at Fortunato's parent's home, the square where he begs and sings until he's attacked by the duke's knights, and the great hall at the duke's court where he's acclaimed. Fortuato was commissioned by Norrlands Opera in Sweden, where it enjoyed 17 sold out performance at its premiere. Originally performed in Swedish, it appears in score in the composer's English translation. A full Swedish singing version is also available.
