Work & Edition Details
Phaedrus is a three movement concerto for piano and orchestra divided into four spatially separated groups, including a jazz orientated "concertante" group. The title refers to Robert Pirsig's cult 70s novel "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" - the story of a roadtrip across America, during which the protagonist muses on "values" and is obsessed with the welfare the young son who is his companion. He is haunted by the Schubert's song "Erlkönig" in which a rider and his child is pursued by a demon. The driving rhythms of Schubert's setting of this Goethe melodrama permeate the outer movements of Phaedrus. The central slow movement is a song of longing.
