The texts are from the volume “Hafis, Rumi, Omar Chajjam – The most beautiful poems from classical Persia” in a transmission by Cyrus Atabay, ed. taken by Kurt Scharf in the publishing house C. H. Beck. The use is made with the kind permission of the island publishing house and the publishing house C. H. Beck. For several years I have been fascinated by the texts of the medieval Persian mystics. The texts of this planned cycle were written by Omar Chajjam (ca 1048-1122), Jalal ud-Din Rumi (1207-1272) and Hafis (ca. 1317-1390). Cyrus Atabay (1929-1996), a nephew of the fallen Shah, has retranslated it. This authors were all supporters of the Sufism. Remarkable is an almost anti-orthodox attitude, which is expressed in the poems. Love is an expression of the soul according to its divine origin. In addition, there is an almost nihilistic tone in Omar Chajjam. Formally, the poems make use of the forms that were available to classical poetry at the time. The contradiction between formal strictness on the one hand and the unpredictability and the border crossing of mystical thinking on the other hand is reflected among other things in the use of unforeseen, almost chaotic chains of thought.
